The Boy Who Was Raised As A Dog by Bruce Perry was one of the first books I have read on the topic of children and trauma. You may remember the name Bruce Perry from my previous post on top ten twitter accounts. I could not help myself by not including this book on my blog as it has impacted my perspective. His book covers ten stories of children who have experienced some kind of trauma in their lives. I must admit that the levels of trauma is severe: ranging from neglect resulting in “failure to thrive” to sexual abuse resulting in “disassociation.” I have learned a lot from reading this book, and gained a HUGE insight to how trauma affects the brain and body. As a previous neuroscientist, he deeply explained how the brain processes and responds to high stresses and how trauma is interrelated to PTSD. For anyone who wishes to learn more on this topic I greatly advise to start by reading this book!
