Being a culturally sensitive counselor should be any therapist’s goal when meeting new clients, especially ones who are from a different culture than the therapist. One advantage that online counseling has is the ability for a client to directly find a counselor who may speak their native language. For instance, Breakthrough is a website that collectively houses over a thousand online therapists. When a potential client searches they even have an option for languages. Not all languages will have a therapist associated with it, but it is a start. Since, the counseling relationship is through technology the counselor should also take the opportunity to read up on ways to be culturally sensitive, along with providing attachments or links that would be relevant to the client. A therapist should also be wise that not all technological aspects of counseling would be beneficial for certain clients.
